Salute All
There is now a full scale civil war raging in Syria, with the Rebels gaining strength by the day.
At one point on the weekend they occupied several suburbs of Damascus, the capitol, but withdrew after they were subject to an all out assault by what remains, (what hasn't defected) of the Syrian Army and Security forces.
It is only a matter of time till Assad and his henchmen are driven out. Hopefully a democratic opposition takes power and there is not much retaliatory bloodshed. There is a chance we might see a radical Sunni influence in the Rebel army. The longer the fight goes on, the more radical the opposition which finally takes over is likely to be.
However, remember, the Syrian people are no different than every else, they want freedom, not another tyranny.
Syria is much more built up than Libya, so much of the fighting is taking place in urban areas. This means the heavy equipment and aircraft of the Syrian government are not as effective. US and European air support is probably not necessary.
Unfortunately the Russian and Chinese governments, (both dictatorships) are doing all they can to prevent Assad from falling, by blocking sanctions which would prevent the export of Syrian oil and products. Complete sanctions would cause events to unfold much more rapidly. Turkey is doing much to advance the cause of the Rebels, having blocked exports through its territory, a major pathway previously, Turkey was Syria's major trading partner. Turkey is also closing its eyes to Rebel infiltration through Turkish border areas. Turkey has a vested interest in a democratic Syria, is heavily influencing the Rebels and this is a major reason I am hopeful the new government will not be too radical.
