Salute Buzz,

I've always had a bit of a soft spot for the earlier jet fighter aircraft. My particular favourite was the English Electric Lightning (http://www.sonicbomb.com/xv1.php?vid=lightning&id=473&ttitle=English%20Electric%20Lightning&s=39&w=560&h=420).

Astonishing for an early fifties design, it's flight performance was not equalled until the latest generation of jet fighter aircraft, F22 and Eurofighter Typhoon. But I don't think either of them can go supersonic in a climb on dry power, which the lightning could do.

It was range limited, just like the Spitfire before it. But like the Spit, it was intended to be an interceptor and nothing else.

The numbers are astonishing; 50,000 ft/min initial rate of climb, 36,000 ft in 2.5 minutes. One example was zoom climbed to over 88,000 ft. I remember watching them as a child in airshows in the UK. Only the Vulcan was louder, I seem to recall.

Look out in the video for the 74 squadron markings in the in-flight shots.

Wow, that site (http://www.sonicbomb.com) is a veritable cornucopia of aircraft videos. Look here (http://www.sonicbomb.com/xv1.php?vid=tsr2&id=476&ttitle=The%20BAC%20TSR-2&s=56&w=560&h=420) for a video of the ill-fated TSR2.

I notice that my links above are now snafu.

Here's an alternative one for the lightning video (http://www.metacafe.com/watch/827003/english_electric_lightning/). A link for the TSR2 (http://www.metacafe.com/watch/951799/the_raf_tsr_2/) video too.

Its taken me a week to get to this.

bloody marvellous. I know of this museum, but have never been there. One of Australias wealthiest families are big supporters.

Just think for a moment about the sabre getting airborne. These days you need to be checked out by a pilot with experience on that aircraft unless it is a brand new plane where a test pilot is used.

But this is a very old plane, where there are very few pilots around who have ever flown it. So it would almost be like flying it for the first time.
