As members may or may not know, the British and Americans used female pilots to ferry aircraft from the factories to the combat units. Otherwise the number of pilots needed to do those flights would have been considerable, and would have reduced front line strength.
One of the most famous RAF Ferry pilots was Diane Barnato Walker, her story is quite amazing. Here's a link to it: (although the article is out of date, she died in 2008 at the age of 90)
