Salute All

I have mentioned this Australian company which manufactures replica Spitfires before. They started with an 80% scale version, now it is up to 90%, and you can have the option of a converted Chevy LS2 V8 engine of 430 hp. It has a fast cruise of 276 mph, and climb of around 3500 fpm, which is roughly equivalent to a Spit Ib. Cost is around $150,000 in kit form.

Pretty hot looking aircraft.

Here are some videos of the V8 powered version:

S! Buzz,

Does that include the engine? Thinking about a syndicate now...

Most of the information is on the website, and I believe you can write them for more info. You need to scroll to the right in the link I gave you at the bottom of my post.

The US dollar has dropped dramatically versus the Aussie dollar recently, the Aussie dollar used to be only 70 cents american, now it is full value, so prices have gone up. I think you'd be paying $170,000.00 for the V8 version.

How many people are you thinking of for this syndicate?

I am thinking of getting my Canadian Ultralight licence, (similar to your American Experimental licence) but I do not believe this would not permit me to fly this plane. :(

Canadian Ultralight licence allows a maximum take-off weight up to 1232 lbs, and a maximum stall speed of 45 mph.

Thats not a bad price for a new plane I have seen the scale replicas of p-51s and those were going for around $500,000. You could get a real t6 texan for the same price as that spit. I would think the replica would be cheaper to mantain but the texan would be the real thing I would be happy with any of them even just the $170,000

Hey Snake, if Winger and I get a Harvard, (that's what we call Texans up here), will you do the maintenance on it in exchange for flight time? ;)

Winger can teach me how to fly it. :D

Like this (http://www.barnstormers.com/listing_images.php?id=328637) one? A snip at $175,000 .

Too true. Why not go the whole hog (http://www.legendaryaircraft.hu/for_sale/yak_3_white_100/) though?

Yep, if you wanted to have a max. performance WWII replica fighter, the Yak-3 newbuild would be it.

New airframe, so you don't have to baby it, although the engine is a rebuild of a 1940's manufactured engine, so you probably wouldn't want to run max. boost.

Apparently the Yak-3 is quite tricky though, with a stall that is not as forgiving as the game aircraft. It has quite high wingloading, depended on the power to weight ratio and high speed for its turn performance. Probably a little over my skill potential...

I notice they don't mention the price... don't ask if price is an issue....

Its interesting that the FW190 replica that is being built in Germany is powered by a Russian engine, and the Yak is powered by an American, the wonders of globalization.

S! Buzz,

Yep the wingloading must be pretty high, I've been up close to one of the yak 11 trainer variants and the one thing that amazes is how tiny the wings are compared to the rest of the aircraft. Though the yak 11 only has the 850hp radial.

These were the replica mustangs I saw at the Reno Air Races http://www.thundermustang.com/ one in there for sale for $675,000 they were carbon fiber but it still seemed overpriced. Thats why I was supprised at the less than $200k price of the spit replica.

If you want to go in the other direction, you can get a very reasonably priced Nieuport 17 replica for much less.

The kit goes for around $12,000

They have mini radials which are designed to power them:

These are around $13,500

This is the same company which built the FLYBOYS planes.

If you don't want to build them yourself, the FLYBOYS replica Nieuports are on sale:

It would be cool to have one of the planes from the movie just to say that it was in it. The price for that kit is nice but from what I have noticed it seems that people who start kit planes end up running out of money or quit before building it. If I was going to go for a biplane I would get a Stearman which runs around $100k mostly since they have two seats and I would perfer to fly with friends. Theres allways lots for Stearmans for sale http://www.controller.com/list/list.aspx?ETID=1&setype=1&Manu=BOEING/STEARMAN&GUID=6bef09f4c56d4206a49298c9e0a46c92

I would just be happy with a 19 thousand dollar Taylorcraft or Aeronca.
I do not see real flight in my future anytime soon...

Or if you wanted to go real cheap and not worry about getting a pilots license you could go this route. http://www.ultralightnews.ca/airventure03/mifyter.htm

Funky looking little plane. :)

In Canada, we have a slightly different category for the definition of an Ultralight, a person with just an Ultralight licence can fly something which has a maximum take-off weight up to 1232 lbs and a maximum stall speed of 45 mph. So a Canadian Ultralight can be a bigger, heavier and more powerful aircraft than an American Ultralight.

The licence requires "...a total of 10 hours flying time, including not less than 5 hours dual instruction and 2 hours solo flying", so it is not that difficult to get.
