First off Salute all, it's been a while so this is what I have come up with so as I can get a decent fps rate without having to go to the very lowest settings.

S! Limey. Long time no see.

Just to let you know, we have our own dogfight server up and running now. It has been public for about 2 weeks now and going great. It is historical based and objective minded. There are lots of AI flights as well so you can fly it even when no ones on and still have a good time. Just look for it on Hyper Lobby. RAF74 Historical. You will need to upgrade your install to the UltraPack 2.0 All the info you need is located here: http://www.raf74.com/forums/showthread.php?t=496

Hope to see you on the server and in FS

I just finished putting my new rig together this past weekend (it was 6 years old). Lots of fun and I'm very happy.

You've laid out the specs on a good, solid system. You might want to look into the AMD X4 620. Same price as the one you selected, with 4 channels instead of 2. I picked up a copy of Maximum PC at the airport today and they ran a story about building a rig using the X4. It performed very strongly. In the brave new world of multi-channel CPUs it's hard to figure out how they perform since clock speeds don't mean as much.

Don't know much about AMD but I've been very happy with Asus mobo's and you certainly can't go wrong with Corsair. The WD blues are good, too. However, for a little extra I'd recommend the Black. It has a 5 year warranty and is constructed with a second actuator (helps reduce stress on the hardware) and larger cache (makes it faster). If you plan on keeping the rig for any period of time it would be worth the investment IMHO.

I just bought the Saphire HD 5770 1gig video card (not the jupiter) and so far so good. Murdock put up a thread about this that was very helpful. I had similar issues that he cited and right now have solved the problem by turning AA off. The regular 5770 is more than enough for IL-2. I decided at the last minute to not go the Jupiter route and saved the $20-25. You may have researched it and found the cost differential was worth it, but I'm not disapointed with my decision.

BTW- I highly recommend W7 64 bit. Takes some getting used to but it is worth the upgrade.

Good luck!

S! Limey,

Not sure what your budget is, but I'd be a bit concerned about going for a DDR2 memory system right now. Have you considered a DDR3 M/B like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128378&cm_re=am3_ddr3-_-13-128-378-_-Product?

You could pair it up with this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231277 and pay about the same in total.

I think that would probably give you a bit more future-proofing (as much as you can with PCs of course)

Hi everyone,

I haven't been around but this thread peaked my interest. My computer has been in survival mode due to lack of funds so I have been extracting maximum value out of it and upgrading bits and pieces over the last couple of years.

My system is currently:
Manufacturer: Home built
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 @ 3.00GHz
Memory: 4GB Corsair CM2X1024-6400C4
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda XT 2TB
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285
Monitor: Samsung T220 22" & Samsung 226BW 22"
Sound Card: Creative SB X-Fi XtremeGamer
Speakers/Headphones: Creative Fatal1ty Gaming Headset
Keyboard: Logitech G15
Mouse: Logitech G9
HOTAS: Saitek X52 Pro
Mouse Surface: It's flat
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P35-DQ6 (F9 BIOS)
Computer Case: Antec P182SE

Where have I been? Single player heaven basically. I've been enjoying ArmA II + ACE2 pack and creating custom missions and campaigns. It's a wonderful combined arms simulation. Also been playing the Stalker games and Dragon Age.

I don't really have a usable internet for online gaming so haven't been able to play online anything. Just to give you an idea how bad internet is here now my downloads average 5-10KB/sec on a typical night. That's on an ADSL1 connection with theoretical maximum of 166KB/sec. The internet around here is heavily congested due to every man and his dog downloading illegal torrents off the net. I am hoping to move this year to an area with better internet.

Oh and Windows 7 is an amazing operating system. Light years better than my previous Vista install.

The website is looking excellent and it is great to see the squadron still flying the dangerous skies of IL2. A big hello to Stew, Tai, Buzz, Snake and the rest. Hope you are all keeping well.

See you around,
Vic

Great to hear from you Vic.

Dont be a stranger. This year will be a big year with the release of SOW BOB.

However we are getting a lot of enjoyment out of the mod packages.

Bimmer has created a few good short wars and we are flying the forgotten skies war as well.

Also a few of us now have Rise of flight the ww1 sim.

S! Vic

Great to hear from you again! Your rig is far superior than the one I had up until 2 months ago :) However, all I had to play was IL-2 and COD2... You would be more than fine to play IL-2, but I get the internet issues you are facing. Wouldn't be a whole lot of fun flying from Oz.

As Tai said, the mods have really tranformed this tired 'ole sim. New maps, lots of new planes (including Korean war jets), and the ability to have moving objects/AI on DF maps. Of course, we are still patiently waiting on Oleg's Battle of Britain sim- think we were waiting when you were CO ! LOL

Thanks for stopping by, mate. Would love to have you join us on TS even if you can't fly.

Stew

I was wondering what had happened to Oleg's new sim. Seems like it has been in development forever.

I'll try and find my old TS settings and get on sometime to say hello.
